Ireland is one of the most selenium deficient countries in the world. Irish pastures supply only 38% of the Selenium requirements of an average lactating cow.
Selenium (Se) is now recognised as an essential trace element for ruminants. It is required in cattle for normal growth and for helping to prevent other health disorders.
One of the most common is myopathy, and it primarily affects the skeletal muscles and the animals have weak leg muscles. A condition manifested by difficulty in standing and after standing a trembling and staggering gait. This is often referred to as knuckling. Eventually, the animals are unable to rise, and weakness of the neck muscles prevents them from raising the head. Another popular descriptive name for this is white muscle disease.
Selco-V in beef cattle can aid in the prevention or correction of muscular degeneration (myopathy), cardiomyopathy, hepatic degeneration, enhancement of immune response to infectious diseases in animals, stress or ill-health due to poor weather and or malnutrition.
